Why?
Rarely do the stars align to undertake these sorts of adventures; we're firm believers that when they do, one has to snaffle the opportunity, before it quietly slinks away into the mist of indecision, excuses and nervousness - as opportunities often do.
Such an alignment has just fallen into place for us - Charlie has liberated himself from his job, the boys are at a juncture where a term out of school (being home-schooled by us, of course...) won't impact their education, and Nina - being self-employed - can dictate the terms of her own shackles.
Charlie & Nina had a similar moment 15 years ago, which led to a 13-month overland trip through Europe and Asia and back (see here). Now that we have two boys, a year-plus long trip might be too ambitious, but we've carved out four and a half months or so, making judicious use of the summer term.
Kindness, tolerance, understanding, exploring, adventure and family are important to us. What better way to educate ourselves and our boys than by throwing us all into a host of new cultures, people and situations?
